Are there competing claims to the possession of the first nugget?
Well, as with a baseball star, there's always a contender, always a pretender to want to question the true authority. We have an immaculate paper record of our nugget's lineage, its history, its provenance. However, there are other nuggets. Many pieces of gold were found in those heady first days of January 1848 after Marshall had picked up this nugget. Other nuggets were found by his workmen, a Mormon cook, an assistant of Marshall's. Others found their first nuggets. So we believe there are other qualifiers for that first generation of first find nuggets, first discovery era, first discovery period, but ours is clearly the supreme first.
